Raptors of Japan — Field Notes by Hide
A long-term observational project on Peregrine Falcons (Falco peregrinus), examining territorial defense behavior and interspecific interactions during the breeding season.
Study Site
The study site is located at a cliff used as a nesting site by Peregrine Falcons in western Japan. Observations are conducted from a fixed observation point on the valley side below the cliff, approximately 110 m from the nest site. The open airspace above the cliff allows continuous visual monitoring of raptor flight behavior and territorial interactions.
Observation Method
Observations are conducted from a fixed ground observation point using binoculars and telephoto lenses. Behavioral events are recorded in chronological field logs, including species identity, flight behavior, altitude, and territorial responses.
Distance Measurements
Distances reported in this study represent line-of-sight measurements obtained from the fixed observation point using a laser rangefinder.
Peregrine Falcon Territorial Defense Log
This log documents territorial defense responses of Peregrine Falcons toward intruding raptors and other birds near the nesting territory during the breeding season.
